Welcome to Sycamore Class – Spring Term
Staff in Sycamore Class: Emily (class teacher), Sharon, Lorna and Elley (teaching assistants).
Welcome to the Spring Term in Sycamore Class. We are looking forward to a busy and engaging term filled with meaningful learning opportunities that support our pupils as they continue their journey through Key Stage 4.
Sycamore Class follows the ‘Moving On’ Equals Curriculum, which is designed to support young people in developing key skills for adulthood. Our curriculum focuses on Maths, English and ICT, alongside Vocational Studies, World Studies and independent living skills. Learning is personalised and carefully adapted to meet individual needs, interests and next steps.
Pupils are supported throughout the school day on a one-to-one basis or in small groups. We place a strong emphasis on developing communication, independence and confidence, encouraging pupils to make choices, express preferences and build self-help skills within everyday routines.
Learning This Term in Sycamore Class
This term, pupils will take part in a wide range of practical, engaging and meaningful learning experiences. All learning is supported by visual, sensory and practical approaches to ensure pupils can access learning at their own level.
· Technology (Resistant Materials) Pupils will explore a range of resistant materials and simple tools in a safe and supported environment. This supports problem-solving skills, fine motor development and understanding how things work.
· English – Plays and Storytelling English sessions will focus on plays and familiar stories, including The Boy Who Cried Wolf and The Magic Twig. Pupils will engage through listening activities, role play, drama, visuals and sensory experiences.
· Mathematics – Data and Number Skills Pupils will continue to develop number skills through practical, real-life activities. This term we will explore data and different ways of showing numbers, including sorting, counting, tallying, pictograms and simple graphs. Learning is linked to functional maths skills used in everyday situations.
· Independence and Life Skills Independence is a key focus across the day. Pupils will work on managing their time, following routines, making choices and increasing responsibility for personal tasks. Skills are taught through daily activities to help pupils apply learning in meaningful, real-life contexts.
· First Aid and Safety Awareness Pupils will learn basic first aid awareness, including recognising when they or others may need help. They will practise how to request support, identify trusted adults and understand simple safety rules to support wellbeing and self-advocacy.
· Cultural Studies – China Our World Studies focus this term is China. Pupils will explore Chinese culture through food, traditions, clothing, landmarks and celebrations. Learning will be sensory and visual, supporting curiosity and understanding of the wider world.
· Communication Skills Communication is embedded throughout all learning. Pupils are encouraged to share their opinions, feelings and beliefs using their preferred communication methods, including speech, symbols, objects of reference or communication technology. Staff model and support communication consistently throughout the day.
· Phonics and Early Reading Pupils will continue to access daily phonics streaming sessions, supporting sound recognition, listening skills and early reading development. Sessions are tailored to individual ability levels.
Pupils will have regular opportunities to access the playground throughout the day. Please ensure all clothing is clearly named, including smaller items such as hats and gloves, as many pupils find it difficult to recognise their own belongings.
Please ensure you child have a coat in school every day – especially as the weather is still rather cold.
We value strong communication with families. Please feel free to contact the Sycamore Class team via the home–school diary or by contacting the school office. Pupils’ learning will continue to be shared on Evisense.
